Lil J's 1st Bike

2009 Yamaha V Star 250

Builder: Greg Kaganyuk

This has been my weekly commuter since August 2024. It has been a great bike. The Yamaha V Star 250, in the past it was called the Virago 250, is reliable and cheap to run.

It gets over 60 miles per gallon (mpg)). Sometimes over 70 mpg if I'm not riding too spiried.

Insurance is cheap. I'm in my 30s and have full coverage and its less than $400 for the full year.

Parts and maintenance is cheap. The usual stuff like oil and filters is always available at my local motorcycle shop or Amazon.

I haved owned two of these V Star/Virago 250s. Each started as a barn find. After a thorough carb cleaning and refreshing of wear parts, they were road worthy.

I've used my bike to teach my siblings and friends how to ride. Its such an easy bike to jump on and go.

Alright, so want have I done to this bike.

When I got it, it was poorly spray painted black. And needed the usual:

  • a carb cleaning
  • new tires
  • new motor oil and oil filter
  • gas tank flush and de-rusting

After getting it running, it was time to mod it to my liking. So I went wild:

  • Spray painted it myself
  • New handlebar
  • LED headlight
  • New RFY rear shocks
  • Sissy bar (perfect for a backpack during my commutes)
  • LED turn signals
  • New handlbar grips
  • New tail light

Time to cruise through southern California!
